St Louis Zoo - The Saint
Louis Zoo is a world-class institution and leader among zoos with innovative
animal management, research, conservation, education, exhibit design and community
support programs. The Saint Louis Zoo consists of approximately 800 species
of animals (that's 9,200 animals!). This
does not include 120,000 leaf cutter ants and 1,700 partula snails!
» Gateway Arch Jefferson National Expansion Memorial - Jefferson National Expansion Memorial consists of the Gateway Arch, the Museum of Westward Expansion, and St. Louis' Old Courthouse. During a nationwide competition in 1947-48, architect Eero Saarinen's inspired design for a 630 foot stainless steel arch was chosen as a perfect monument to the spirit of the western pioneers. Construction of the Arch began in 1963 and was completed on October 28, 1965, for a total cost of less than $15 million. The Arch has foundations sunk 60 feet into the ground, and is built to withstand earthquakes and high winds. It sways up to one inch in a 20 mph wind, and is built to sway up to 18 inches.

- Faust County Park includes the Historic Village, ThornHill, The St.
Louis Carousel and Gallery and The Butterfly House. Thornhill
is the 1819 estate of Missouri's second governor which includes eight buildings--the
house, two barns, a summer kitchen, a smoke house, a distillery, an ice house
and a granary. Nine 19th century buildings comprise Faust Historical Village
which include a carriage house, two barns, a blacksmith shop, two smokehouses
and a log cabin with two log-box rooms connected by a breezeway. The Butterfly
House is reminiscent of butterfly wings and overlooks a small lake.

Cahokia Mounds
- The remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico
are preserved at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Within the 2,200-acre tract, located
a few miles west of Collinsville, Illinois, lie the archaeological remnants of the central
section of the ancient settlement that is today known as Cahokia. According to archaeological
finds, the city of Cahokia was inhabited from about A.D. 700 to 1400. At its peak, from A.D.
1050 to 1200, the city covered nearly six square miles and possibly 10-20,000 people lived
here and over 120 mounds were built.
